Right in the heart of Mönchengladbach is the city’s Abteiberg Museum. It was chosen by the German section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) as the museum of the year in 2016. Outstanding collections of international art – from the 1960s onwards in particular – and content-based cooperation with important private collections as well as a continuous programme of first-rate exhibitions have made the museum one of the leading venues for the display of contemporary art in Germany. The museum building which was designed by Hans Hollein and opened in 1982 is also a globally recognised milestone in the development of post-modern museum architecture. If it’s a nice day you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore the adjoining sculpture park after visiting the museum. It’s a great place to unwind and relax – right in the heart of the city. Thanks to continued financial support from Stadtsparkasse Mönchengladbach there’s an ‘open door’ exhibition at Abteiberg Museum on the first Sunday of every month with free entry, guided tours, and a range of children’s activities.
