Alter Markt city church

The Alter Markt city church in Mönchengladbach is a Late Gothic building that was constructed between 1469 and 1533. The high tower at the east end of the building is divided into four stories. The tower is crowned by a lofty octagonal spire. The nave and side aisles are impressively wide and simple. The walls of the nave are supported by five sturdy columns on each side which open into the aisles through wide, simple arches. The gallery above the main entrance is rounded off by the large organ. Today the city church has also become a key venue for cultural events in Mönchengladbach. These include art exhibitions, workshops and concerts, and the variety of events is matched by their popularity.
