Textile City

The history of the industry which dominated the city until the middle of the 20th century goes back to the 18th century. Even today Mönchengladbach is still the headquarters of many famous companies in the textile and clothing/fashion industries as well as the textile machinery and textile logistics industries. Today there are roughly 80 such companies in the city which employ about 3,200 people. With the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology and the Textile and Clothing Research Institute located here, Mönchengladbach provides an excellent base for the future growth of the textile industry. The new Textile Academy NRW in Mönchengladbach is an ensemble of a museum and textile history (Monforts Quarter with textile machine depot), training and further education (Textile Academy), studies (university) and research (Fraunhofer Institute).
