FEST AM SEE – the family festival with a farmers’ market and a Concours d’Élegance (horse-drawn carriage show)
The 44th “Fest am See” is taking place on the 27th and 28th of July 2019, and it’s one of the most popular summertime attractions in Mönchengladbach. The family festival whose reputation extends well beyond the city itself is being put on by Marketing Gesellschaft Mönchengladbach mbH (MGMG) in cooperation with Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Wickrath e.V. (the local heritage and tourism association), and it brings people of all ages to Wickrath for a summer get-together where they can have fun, relax and simply have a chat.
This year the organisers have once again put together a varied programme of events which offers something for everyone. The promotor of the market, Reno Müller, will once again be there on both days from 11 a.m. hosting the market which sells farm produce as well as plants and equipment for the garden where over 70 exhibitors will be displaying their wares – ranging from the decorative to the useful, delicious and novel. Visitors can also look forward to a varied programme of stage events, including some great live music acts. Three bands will provide a cool soundtrack for the event: on Saturday Rody Reyes and his band “Havanna con Klasse” will bring pure Cuban verve to performances of the very best of salsa, merengue, bachata and traditional Cuban music. The “Big Maggas”, the “greatest boy band in the world”, will once again wow audiences with their performance of an idiosyncratic and therefore refreshingly different mix of global and German hits as well as “musical flops”, and their crazy stage sets with thrilling animations provide the ultimate fun-filled spectacle. On Sunday the “Milchkännchen” will create a cheerful, light-hearted mood with brass band music and fun jazz.
The festival’s Sunday events in the avenues at Wickrath castle start with the traditional ecumenical open-air religious service. A musical accompaniment is provided by the hunting horn ensemble of the Mönchengladbach and the Rheydt hunting associations. A range of local Wickrath clubs are once again taking part in the ‘Fest am See’ this year. As well as the programme of stage events there will be special events in the horse riding arena, such as sheep dog trials.
From 10 a.m. onwards on Saturday the large riding arena is the stage for the Elite Stutenschau (Elite Mares Show) which is put on by the Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch (the local horse-breeding federation). The best mares across a whole range of different categories from Shetland ponies to heavy cart horses will be vying to impress the judges.
In special recognition of the livestock breeding which is undertaken in the Wickrath area, the Fest am See in conjunction with the Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch (local horse-breeding federation) will hold a “Concours d’Élegance” for the first time this year. About 25 historic horses and carriages will take part in the grand carriage procession, and the drivers and grooms will be wearing the appropriate clothing for the type of carriage. The carriage ride excursion begins at 11 o’clock on the Saturday morning, and it runs through Wickrath and the surrounding areas over a course of roughly 20 km in length. Once all the teams have returned to the castle each of the traditional teams of horses will be presented to the public, and the carriages will be displayed in the riding arena. On the Sunday the “rolling museum” sets off at midday on a course through Wickrath before returning to the castle grounds. After this there will be an opportunity to take a close look at the carriages by the fountain in the inner courtyard of the castle before the teams move to the show ground. This is where a competition will be held over a course which incorporates numerous obstacles that are specially designed for traditional carriage driving teams.
With its varied programme of events the 2019 ‘Fest am See’ will once again be a great festival for the whole family. It’s well worth a visit! Detailed information about the programme and the course of the Concours d’Élegance can be viewed at
