Mill tour to pre-industrial times

The former “Flachsland” had a great wealth of mills, whose buildings still leave impressive traces of the pre-industrial era in Mönchengladbach and the surrounding area. The mill bus tour leads from Geroweiher via Rheindahlen through the Mühlenbachtal valley and along the Schwalm river, where the mills that first struck oil and then ground grain for centuries still clatter quietly today. The route continues to the Schrofmühle, an old water mill that is considered one of the best-preserved mills in the Rhineland. Here it is possible to get out and visit the mill for an entrance fee of 2.50 EUR. In Tüschenbroich, the tour continues on foot to the oil and grain mills, whose history dates back to the 14th/15th century. On the onward journey through the fertile and tranquil mill landscape idyll on the Schwalm, you will leave the natural monument “Schwalmtal” behind you and return to Mönchengladbach after an excursion of approx. 3 hours.

Schloss Rheydt

Castle Tour through Mönchengladbach

Castles and palaces have always had a magical attraction. Just by looking at them, one feels transported back to medieval times with robber barons and noble damsels. The castle tour (bus tour) presents three beautiful castles along the Niers and tells the stories of past centuries. The tour starts with the moated castle of Schloss Myllendonk near Korschenbroich. Built on stilts in the Niers floodplain, the privately owned and still inhabited castle impresses with its tree-covered landscape typical of the Lower Rhine. The tour continues to Rheydt Castle, whose origins date back to the 12th century and which is still the only completely preserved Renaissance complex on the Lower Rhine. The finale is at the baroque Wickrath Castle, built according to French models and with a lovingly laid-out, axially symmetrical castle park directly on the Niers.
