The Theater
The Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach
The Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach successfully puts on a wide variety of cultural performances in the Lower Rhine region, ranging from large ensemble plays to evening recitals. Every day over 500 employees are involved in preparing a range of performances that are wonderfully entertaining and also educational. Since the 2010/11 season the fate of the multi-purpose theatre, musical theatre, ballet and concert venue has been in the hands of its director and general manager, Michael Grosse. The union of the Krefeld and Mönchengladbach city theatres has already lasted almost 70 years: this makes the joint community theatre the oldest such institution in Germany.
In addition to being a venue for theatre and ballet performances and hosting its own orchestra – the Niederrheinischer Sinfoniker (Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra) under its General Musical Director, Mihkel Kütson – the community theatre also boasts an outstanding musical theatre ensemble which is managed by opera director Andreas Wendholz and has enjoyed nationwide renown for many years now.
There’s a lot to discover for young theatre-goers too: every winter the programme of events includes a new Christmas fairy tale. Puppet shows and kids’ concerts complete the range of shows for the theatre-goers of the future.
