NEIGHBOURHOOD WHISPERING in Eicken
What makes
Eicken so beautiful
The district of Eicken in the North is considered as a culturally colourful, young and dynamic district with impressive Wilhelminian architecture. Along the small pedestrian zone you can walk from the church via the „Aretz Plätzke“ to the Eicken market square, where on Wednesdays and Fridays the weekly market invites you to buy fresh food.
Even if the former Borussian pub „Zum Aretz Plätzke“ has long ago closed its doors and an attractive residential area has developed on the former football Olympus Am Bökelberg, the people of Eicken remain true to their historical connection with their local football club. The monuments along the Eicken pedestrian zone and the Bökelberg memorial at Bökelstraße 169, which reminds us of the sporting home of our football team and is artfully illuminated at night by a floodlight mast, are definitely worth seeing.
But Eicken is also known for its independent art and culture scene. Many creative and cultural people, associations and initiatives have discovered the district for themselves and have moved a lot in recent years. As a result, Eicken has not only become more colourful, but has also become more attractive, especially for young people.
If you sit on Schillerplatz for an after-work beer in one of the cosy outdoor restaurants on a beautiful summer evening, visit the lovingly designed square at the Alte Tanke or throw yourself into the vibrant hustle and bustle at the annual Greta Market, you will feel this creative spirit, which is also evident in many small facets of the townscape.
The Theater im Gründungshaus – TiG for short – offers a small but fine cultural and comedy programme, and beyond the theatre stage, people meet here in a large community to forge ideas and hold workshops.
